Lightbulb Creative Suite 4 (CS4) "setup has encountered an error and cannot continue"

I know this same issue existed for some people with Adobe CS3 and related products (Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc), but I hadn't experienced it until trying to install CS4's Master Collection...

setup has encountered an error and cannot continue
I've already found a resolution to the problem, but thought I'd post it here in case anyone else runs into it...

Methods that fixed the issue for others include (make sure you've uninstalled all previous Adobe products first):

    "regsvr32 jscript.dll"

    Now re-run setup.

My resolution was a weirder one however. When I installed Vista I pointed official documents/videos etc. folders to an external drive. Now when I try to install or uninstall certain applications that might reference those folders (ie; My Documents, for program information or saves), the install or uninstall might fail. The first time I experienced this was with Nokia PC Suite.

To cut a long story short, all I had to do to resolve my problem was plug in my external drive, finishing uninstalling all existing Adobe products, and then install CS4.

Please help me REC (or anyone), I am in need of help.

I originally had Adobe Photoshop CS3 installed both on my Vista x64 machine and my dads XP x86 machine. I got hold of a copy of Photoshop CS4 and installed it at my dads, it worked fine. I then returned home, uninstalled Photoshop CS3 and attempted to install Photoshop CS4 but around 15% in, it asked me for a CD. I had no choice but to cancel the installation.Whenever I run the setup.exe file now, I get the "setup has encountered an error and cannot continue" message.

I have uninstalled Photoshop CS3, Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 and ran CS3 cleaner successfully. I attempted to run CS4 cleaner but it says "there are no session to delete".

I have ran a registry cleaner which has removed all traces of Adobe that I can see, I also ran a junk file cleaner and removed all temporary files. I have visted the Common Files folder and deleted all Adobe folders there, and I have visited the users folder and Program Files (x86) to remove the Adobe folders. I have completed all your solutions, including solution 3 and I have also rebooted several times.

I tried running the setup.exe file from alternative locations (such as another hard drive) but it keeps saying setup has encountered an error.

    Any ideas?

yeah gimp is still a tad behind pala - it feels like it got stuck at Photoshop 5

gohan, i'd try Adobe's forums - they're usually pretty good at responding to these sorts of queries

I'm getting somewhere now, a log file in Common Files says the setup crashed because WinBootstrapper1.cab was missing. This file never existed for me in my installation folder, and was not needed when I installed CS4 on my dads computer. It appears Vista needs this file.

I downloaded the trail version of CS4 and borrowed the WinBootstrapper1 file from there. Setup.exe now works, however it still asks me for a CD so I have no choice but to quit. How odd...

I will try the trial version exe later on, and see if that asks for a CD.
