    Is SATA hot swappable???

I have read in a numerous number of places that SATA is hot swappable just like SCSI drives are, but I have yet to had one be able to do this

I have tried on 2 SATA drives and both just froze the computer when I put the drives back in ... and when I pulled the drives out windows was still able to run normally (Please note that none of the drives were damaged in the process and both still work perfectly)

Has anybody else heard about this? Or am I just reading things?
Split a piece of wood and I am there, lift a stone and you will find me.

    at the moment, not yet.

It will be in the future if there would be people who can construct a power management device to make it a "Hot swappable" compliant device for both windows/linux.

Do remember that you have to power it down with permision from the OS before you yank it out of the SATA socket

I have swaped many SATA drives in many different systems and everytime it has worked. I am a technician, so i work with this kind of stuff everyday. I was looking it up though because I wasnt completely sure hot swaping a hard drive was good for the drives health, but I know for a fact that any other SATA drive is completely safe to hot swap.

depending on how its setup in the OS I would imagine, in Linux I have had no problem with sata2 and hot swapping, in Windows I have no idea as my Windows box still has sata1 drives.

Vista is not a problem either... All i used to do and still do with my new mobo is just yank the power out and put the other drive in. Sometime to detect the new drive you have to do a hardware change serach to detect the new drive going in.

in that case we better have a real answer:

with sata mode set to ahci/enhanced mode: yes
with sata set to legacy/ide mode: probably not/not safely.
