On second thought, I'm going to refrain from further posting in this thread.

    Tolkien epic named best book
    From correspondents in London
    December 14, 2003

JRR Tolkien's fantasy tale The Lord of the Rings was named Britain's favourite novel today in a British Broadcasting Corp poll.

The book won 23 per cent of around 750,000 votes cast to determine the winner from five finalists.

The shortlist had been whittled down over several months from a BBC list of the country's 100 best-loved novels, which was based on votes from 140,000 people.

The runnerup to Tolkien's novel was Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, which scooped 135,000 votes.

Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy came third, followed by Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

best series by far is george r.r. martins "a song of fire and ice" series.

get it. better than tolkien. better than gemmell (and gemmell is pretty fucking good). any book that kills so many heroes and main characters is good stuff to my mind.

david gemmells rigante series is pretty good as well. i dig the whole celtic thing and gemmell is an easy read.

best hero in any book has to be parmenion is lion of macedon (another david gemmell)
