PS3 DVR Could Actually Be TiVo

Many of us overlooked that Sony actually has licensing rights to use TiVo software in their products from an agreement dating way back to 2001. While this agreement is only good through October of 2008, that's presumably enough time for Sony to launch their DVR product (and of course, that contract could be extended if Sony ponied up the cash). When TiVo was questioned about the potential integration, they responded with an either coy or contractually-obligated "no comment."

I just preordered one of the new $299 TiVo HD systems and can't wait for it to ship out. But if the PS3 could have given me the same thing?even for the same price?I'd have gone that route just to save a component in my setup. If Sony is looking for some serious legitimacy in the home DVR market, integrating TiVo would be a brilliant maneuver.

    Mmm TiVo.

The important word here is could be.... but it wont be.
GU - giving everyone the freedom to post whatever they want...
so long as we can all pay them out if they missed an earlier thread on the same topic!

Keep on keeping on with your anti-PS3 remarks Reslo, but you'll come around sooner or later.

Yeah res, you are welcome to join the dark side... mmmhhhhahhahahahhahah.

But seriously, you need a hell of a lot bigger hard drive to make the ps3 a viable HD dvr. 60 or 80gb just aint cutting it captain.

Still as a gaming console with blue ray capabilities, I believe it's growing on me. Maybe I will be joining the dark side soon... mmmhhhhahhahahahhahah

Then put your own 2.5 inch SATA drive in it? It's designed to be replaced and doesn't void warranty by doing so.

As for being a games console with Blu-ray, don't forget the DVD-upscaling, DLNA media ability (divx streaming depending on DLNA server), native Linux ability (XBMC Linux port soon), internet connectivity (browsing, audio/video streaming), wireless router functionaity etc. etc.

Still you are limited to the size of the 2.5" SATA drive. That's a laptop drive, so if you need a fast drive then you have to compromise on size. Still it's a good step in the right direction if it happens.

Maybe I'll wait till christmas to see if they will be doing any price drops.

Can you use external USB drives on the PS3?

... That certainly makes it a tasty all-in-one media option...

But, I couldn't justify it considering how little I actually use my TV (Not to mention my TV really wouldn't be able to distinguish between DVD quality and Blu-ray quality media).

Hope this change comes through for those that own, or are looking at owning one.

That's fine then, USB2 is fast enough for full HD streaming.
I'd be seriously interested, be nice to get my hands on some bluray action too.
