shouldnt have to change anything in teh reg - sata or ide drive??
If its sata which port is it in, have you tried swapping it around. Have you missed anything in the bios again - think about when you couldnt use your usb keyboard.....

In my experience (but only under XP, I haven't used vista) when I had a working bootable drive in BIOS but windows wouldn't show it at all, I had to open up disk management and set the drive as active before windows would even use it. Only happened once and never had a problem with it since, see if your disk management recognises that there is a drive there and what the status of it is.
In XP you open up administrator tools in control panel then open computer management, disk management will be down the left hand side. If that works how about you just post your lips through the mail so you can kiss my ass

Im with Pala, I had the same issue with mine on my PATA controller. The windows driver installed fine and said all was good but it didnt show either drive until I installed the correct PATA Controller driver.

you shouldnt have to activate your dvd drive in vista, xp or god so help us win98, if it works itll be in there, if not itll have a 'warning will robinson' triangle next to it, or be non existent ( if so see above paragraph) If under device manager you do a scan for new hardware and nothing turns up, your old dodgy and outdated IDE/Pata dvd drive may be cactus - spend the $24 - $50 and buy a new SATA one ( god knows youve spent more than that recently trying to get your pc setup working) BTW - i love you man
