RAM 4 or 8

Im buying a new system soon and I was curious if 4gb is still plenty for games or should I be looking at 8 for a bit of extreme future proofing. Or should I go for faster 4 gb @ 1066 or slower 8 gb @ 800 ?

Firstly to use 8G you need Vista64. Good luck getting that to run all your peripherals.

4G (Only 3.2G or so will be actually used) is more then enough for gaming as video cards carry more and more RAM to take the load off the system RAM.

Heavy apps such as encoding and rendering of image and video files is where maxing out RAM us useful.

You would be better off concentrating on getting the best quality matched RAM pair with low latency and good FSB speed as you can afford and of course a good Mobo, CPU and Video card.

i reckon 4x 1gb 1600mhz sticks, but they aren't cheap and u need a board that supports it :P

otherwise just get 4x 1gb 1066mhz low latency sticks.

Thanks for the help was educational pity the differance in ram has no effect on the price. Im looking at buying the system off ibuypower (australia) the guy who owns pcmaniacs. This is what it will be now that I got your feed back.

Case:
Silverstone Sugo SG01 Evolution Black HTPC w/ Side Windows
Power Supply:
620w Modular PSU SLI Ready (Corsair)
CPU:
Intel Core 2 Quad OVERCLOCKED to 3.0Ghz 12Mb THERMALRIGHT COOLER
Motherboard:
DFI LanParty Junior T2RS mATX P45 DDR2 Crossfire Motherboard
RAM:
4Gb (2x2Gb) 1066Mhz (8500) 5-5-5 Timings (OCZ)
Video Card:
ATI HD4870 512Mb (Powercolor/Sapphire/HIS)
Hard Drive 1:
320Gb 16Mb SATA II NCQ (Samsung/Western Digital)
Optical Drive 1:
Pioneer BDR-202BK 4x Blu-Ray Writer SATA Drive Black
Sound Card:
Onboard Sound
Onboard Network
Operating System:
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit

and that is for 2400 bucks I though pretty decent.

If you overclock you are better off getting 2 x 2GB rather than 4 x 1GB it's more stable and yes 1066 is fine just make sure u get good quality stuff as it will allow you to clock up a little or down with tighter timings ^_^
