• id Software shows off new games, discounts old

QuakeCon is underway, and to celebrate id Software in conjunction with Bethesda has lined up most of their back catalog at crazy, bargain basement prices. You'll find Doom and Wolfenstein titles on the iPhone App Store starting a mere AUD $1.19, and 66% of a bunch of titles on Steam. They're only on sale until Sunday, but each day until then you'll find another great deal made available.

Most impressively at the show thus far was John Carmack's demonstration of their forthcoming shooter Rage, running on the iPhone. Believe it or not, it's still using id Tech 5, the same engine that powers it on consoles. It runs at 60fps, and will "kill anything done on the Xbox or PlayStation 2". If you're not yet impressed, he even insists it will run on the iPhone 2G. What a wizard. It will be out later this year, and will undoubtedly be the best looking game on the platform.

Lastly, indie developers and those who just like to tinker will be wrapped to know that the source code for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Return to Castle Wolfenstein are now available to the public. You can find the links to the packages on the official id Software FTP server below:

At 1.32 Carmac says "and this is just my technology demo", so in otherwords, it's finished.

They wont be developing any new games for the next 10 years.
John Carmack expresses doubts that id Software will launch any new IPs over the next decade in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine as reported by Computer and Video Games. "I doubt we're going to do another IP. It's scary to say it, but maybe not in the next decade even, because we want to support Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake - and hopefully we can add Rage onto that
Hey supporting ur games is well and good.. but not making anything new? wtf?
Anyhow i doubt this will be that long, i think their fallout clone Rage will tank badly.

It's really not a lot like Fallout at all. Apart from the fact it's post-apocalyptic. By that measure there have been dozens of Fallout clones.

As for not creating a new IP, what's the big deal? Look at Blizzard - it has been 12 years since the introduction of their last new game (StarCraft).

I think it's fantastic that they're sticking to Quake, Doom and Wolfenstein. And Rage if it does well.

      Quality over quantity, thanks.
