Dubbed 'Online Pass', all EA Sports console games will be sold with a one-time use registration code as of July this year that grants access to online multiplayer modes. If you've purchased the game second hand and the original access code has been redeemed already, you'll be up for an additional $10 charge to jump online to have a bash, kick, bat - or whatever your flavour of sports simulation is...
While your knee-jerk reaction is probably 'rude!', I can't say I have the greatest of concerns about this approach. While it will do little to reduce the rampant piracy seen with Wii and Xbox 360 titles, it will help minimise second-hand sales and purchases through retail chains such as EB Games and Game. They pay very little for the game, and then sell it at near-new prices with idiotic enticements such as a 6 month warranty on the disc. I personally would rather see the developers make the extra money instead of those stores.
